The Power Of Fasting - By Pastor Kong Hee

I have been fasting regularly since 1986. In the early days, I would fast once a week for 24 hours, from 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday to 6:00 a.m. on Thursday. However, since 2004, I have been going on 21-day full fasts once every 6 months. Once, in 2007, I fasted for 40 days.

Many people have asked me, “Kong, why do you fast so often?” This blog is dedicated to that question. There are many wonderful benefits of fasting:

1. Biological: The physical benefits fasting has toward the body have been so well documented that even non-Christians these days fast regularly for better health. According to World Health Net, a study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, shows that regular fasting can reduce risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, insulin resistance, immune disorders, and more generally, the slowing of the aging process, and the potential to increase maximum life span.

In Japan, “fasting clubs” are now in vogue. A June 16, 2003, issue of Newsweek states that “for decades Japanese doctors have treated obesity, diabetes and some psychiatric illnesses with fasting.”

During a fast, the body takes the opportunity to eliminate a lot of toxins (harmful substances) that have been built up over the years. The toxins are predominantly stored in fat and mucous cells. The body is “resetting” itself. A common detoxification reaction is headaches. This occurs because the toxins in the blood cause it to thicken and hence cause a headache. A simple remedy is to drink more water or have a bowel movement. In fact, a three-day fast has been used as a standard means of detox recommended by nutritionists the world over.

In America, it is now common to have a 28-day detox program. Books such as Get Healthy Through Detox and Fasting: How to Revitalize Your Body in 28 Days by Don Colbert, and New Again! The 28-Day Detox Plan for Body and Soul by Anna Selby, describe detoxification plans which remove harmful toxins from the body and revitalize it.

2. Spiritual: There are a number of very good reasons why we Christians should fast:

a. Breaking the power of the carnal flesh. Our fallen nature is so tightly linked to the physical appetites of our human body. The more inordinately we yield to our physical drives (such as hunger, sleep, sex), the more we embolden the carnal nature of our undisciplined flesh. Apostle Paul himself was fully aware of the power of the flesh, and constantly disciplined his body “to bring it into subjection” (1 Cor. 9:27). One of the ways he did this was “in fastings often.” (2 Cor. 11:27). As I deprive my body of its craving for food, I am taming my flesh and bringing it into subjection to my spirit. By the end of my fasting period, I often find myself more spiritual, more heavenly minded, more in tune with God, and more sensitive to His voice. In fact, the Scripture records that the reason the church leaders of Antioch were so sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit, concerning His plan to reach the Gentile world, was a direct result of prayer and fasting (Acts 13:2).

b. Self-humbling before the Lord. This is the reason why the saints in the Bible fast (Ps. 35:13). They were reminding themselves that they were weak in their own human strength to achieve the big visions and goals that God had set before them. The spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak (Matt. 26:41). Therefore if our God-ordained dream is going to happen, it must be by a supernatural work of the Lord.

Fasting heightens that awareness. When I fast, I feel so weak in myself. I can’t workout in the gym. I can’t run five km (three miles) each day. After every service during my 21-day fasting season, I often felt like “crashing.” I would then cry out to the Lord, “Jesus, I can’t do it, please help me by the power of Your Holy Spirit!” God will always give grace to the humble (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5).

c. Increasing the anointing level. Jesus says that certain demons can’t be expelled except by prayer and fasting (Matt.17:21). Last month at the Kuala Lumpur Emerge (our annual youth conference in Malaysia), many commented that the preaching of the Word and the ministry time were some of the best they have ever had. Honestly, I didn’t feel any different. In fact, I felt I didn’t preach too well in a couple of the sessions because I was tired due to my long fast. However, many attendees sent me text messages and emails to say that their lives were so impacted and irrevocably changed. As I reflect on this, I can clearly see that God Himself was doing the work. He had so anointed my voice and let His power flow freely through the laying on of my hands. The presence and power of God made a huge difference in my time at KL.

3. Revival & Church Growth: In the Bible, whenever the people of God stopped fasting, they became dull and complacent. However, when a fast was decreed, the whole nation underwent revival and deliverance (2 Chr. 20:3-25; Esther 4:16; Ezra 8:21; Jonah 3:5-10). Last month, I fasted and prayed for three specific purposes: (1) 30 percent growth in every pastoral zone, (2) CHC to get its 10,000-seat arena in the city, and (3) my wife Sun to excel in her American singing career. Fasting greatly adds spiritual momentum to my prayer and faith.

What to Do When You Fast?

If you have a sickness, if you are pregnant, or if you are a nursing mother, please don’t fast.

If you have a history of weak health, please seek medical advice beforehand if you want to fast.

If you are on regular medication, please consult a doctor before you fast.

If you can’t fast throughout the week, just go for a three-day fast. But please don’t fast intermittently (stopping a few meals, eating a few meal) as this will affect the rhythm of your gastric flow and may hurt your body. Once you start fasting, don’t eat until you have finished the fast.

You must drink a lot of water when you fast. Be careful of juices and beverages (such as, coffee) that may give you gastric problems because of the acids they contain. For some people, milk may result in a lot of gas. Yoghurt may cause stomach rumblings, and is generally considered food. The best is electrolytes like 100-Plus, H-2-0, Pocari, et cetera. You need the minerals contained in them during a fast. Drinking clear soup in moderation is good when you need extra energy for work or ministry.

Don’t do anything strenuous like run 10 km, house-moving, dance performances, etc. Adopt a commonsense approach to fasting.

Brush your teeth often as you will tend to have bad breath (again, due to the release of toxins). I normally carry a toothbrush and toothpaste everywhere I go when I am fasting.

Most of all, when you fast, try to start or end the day with a time of deep personal devotion and prayer. Fasting must go with prayer. Otherwise, it is just dieting or a “hunger strike.”

How to Break a Fast?

After fasting, always begin with a light meal, even if you have fasted for only a short period of time. Don’t begin with anything too greasy, fatty or heavy.

The next thing to keep in mind is that the longer the fast, the more gradual it takes to break it. Somebody has said that you must take as long a time to break your fast as you do the period of fasting. When you have fasted for a long time (over three weeks), your stomach becomes like that of a baby’s. Feed yourself after that fast as you would a baby. It may take up to a week to get back to consuming normal food.

When you are in a fast, you usually don’t feel so hungry after the first three days. However, when you start to eat again, your hunger comes back. That is when you must really hold on to yourself. Exercise self-control. Fasting causes your stomach to contract. It is unwise to expand it again to the same extent. Fasting is a great way to change our eating habits, which many of us need to do. However, if you are planning to slim down or reduce your weight, fasting alone will not do that normally. You will get a few kilos off, but you will put them on just as quickly unless you combine it with a changed program of eating and exercise.

huuuuusss.......i think this week i ganna be damn tired ........why....??ok....1st as 1st....i have a lot of practices time after my class....is ballroom dance....oh my...is tired + really tired....haha.....i just recover from my sick....then a lot of things are waitting me to go and done for it....oh my gosh......!!!

30 hour famine

This is all my cute student....

last month july of 17 and 18, i was attend 30 hour famine at my hometown....it was a bit late to update this news to my blog....keke..sorry ya guys....in this camp i'm one of the staff...i was become an Angel inside..haha...mean i'm a nurse la....lolz...it was 2 days 1 night camp....so many of my 学记frens come to be helper....so nice to see them...this camp are open 4 secondary school student for join...well....am really 30 hour did't eat just drink water....damn hungry..now only i feel that the children no food to eat really pity...that remaind me can't wasted the food...me always can't finish the food that i order...so bad i am....but now i won't do it .....cos food really important to our stomach...keke.....!!!
In this camp i knw somany new frens....when this camp are in proses...i see so many of student are gastric....but they don't want come to find me...see..how brave they are....!!but me will always take care all my student that have gastric....!!!am so happy to join this camp...next year if have i will join too...

i was run about 4 concert ady...the 1st one is A mei , 2nd is Lee Hom , 3rd is Fish leong and the 4rd is Super Band....waw.....haha...i was a Usher in the Galaxy company...every concert they also will call me...i realise how lucky i'm....haha....cos can watch free concert...
well....when i heard my fren say this time work as Super Band concert i think it was very bored concert...haha...cos the 3 of the singel are old singel just A-Yue a only younger in this band....
but i was wrong...they really can called Super Band....why...?
this concert is full of meaning and memory....can called 时光隧道...from the 1974...i think more earler...i was not born in that time...the song they sing still very famouse until now...
the 3 of the old singel wich is Jonathan Lee ，Wakin Chau ，Lo Ta Yu...and the younger one is A-Yue.....their song really nice....all fans become high and crazy...haha....
luckily i go...if not i think i will be 后悔了....keke...

Sick....terrible medic....

See.....all the medic i need to eat...errr......vomit la....

This few days i keep sick and feel weak.....after see the doc just knw is viral fever....my fever keep up and down...and hold body will in pain....everyday just eat the medic and sleep...after wake up...eat something then eat medic again and sleep again....haiz......see the first time doc i thinl i will be recover...but no....more weak...and more serious....so yest after training dance i go see the second doc again....this time i call doc to give me more strong medic....am eat the medic until want vomit ady...i hate eat medic and see doc a lot....when the time i sick i keep pray to god....finally i recover a bit....praise god...amen....thanks to all my lovely housemate and roommate...they take care of me a lot...thanks 4 all my cell member thay pray 4 me....god will bless u all...amen....^^

Yesterday i was work at Ah mei concert as a staff with my fren call Pei Fang....!This is the first i work with her...haha...and we are also the first time work in there....become a staff in Ah Mei concert it was under a company call 'Galaxy'....thay are the organiser as all singer concert every year...!!!before the time start that was raining so heavily.....and the tunder all the way too....!!but also can't stop the Ah mei fans to come to see their idol concert....all the ppl take the umbrella and line up to wait the time arrive and to get in into the concert.....when the time start that was so many ppl....waw....really a gd concert i never see....!!!a lot of ppl stand and dance with Ah mei at the end...all ppl high until 4get their stress and unhappynees....in that time full of joy in it...!!!All the ppl sing,dnace,laugh and shout....haha....and lukily i work at there...can see a free concert...haha...

上个星期二,有个朋友介绍我去当半天的kalefei,这可是我第一次做这分工...哈哈...感觉不错哦!!我与我的一个室友一起去....还有两个朋友.when we reach 1U that was a van wait at the taxi stand to fetch us to the place!This is a drama...emm..i think is a firm..keke....this firm call "爱味无穷"They just only start to make this drama....hear my fren say it will take about 3month to make this drama....it's under 8tv....!!when we reach the place we work...that was so many shop that haven open...i think is a new place...cos just only 1 or 2 shop was open....and our work place also in one of the shop too....^^!!!when i going to the house....waaw....that was very beauty and a bit like resort style the design...haha....sorry ya guys...my eng not gd...so u all will hard to be read....keke....paiseh paiseh ya....!!!imagine imagine ok..kaka...!!!Then we put all our things...and just sit at the sofa there...wait the comment on the directer to call...!!1 hour...2 hour....3hour...the time past very fast....we just keep wait...some my fren sleep somemore...haiz....damn boring la....>!!!Dawn is a pretty gal and she is high...like a model..keke She is a S'pore actress and i saw two of the local actress...but i don't know them at all...haha...not often watch local movie ofcos dunno lop...keke....!!but handsome too la...haha...!!I was in one of the part too....and i'm stand very close with Dawn yeoh....haha....we are take many NG in it...a bit tired...!!but a lot of fun...so wish to see it la..can't wait ..cos i'm inside ma..haha...!!!we finish our work until night 11pm something...every one was very tired....but one of very kesian things is 3 of my frens did't be called...!!!现在我才知道幕后是这样的...haha...!!!辛苦了一天也是值得的...^^

Last two week i was work at a very big fair under a big company.The company call MIFF....The fair name is MIFF International Furniture Fair 2009.So happy to work at there full of fun and learn so much things at there...hahahaha......all the staff very gd and kind,and our leader kelly also a very gd leader in our team...!!!keke...!!!Remember the 1st day went i start the job...That was a early in the morning we have to wake up....clean all my staff and wear my formal wear + my coat...hmmm...look smart right..haha....high class job also..haha...lolz.....!!!two of my housemate also same with me...work at the same place....luckily hor got a housemate got car...haha...but every day have to face the same problem that is traffic jam....=.='''..hate it so much la...!!!A very unluckily day that is a flood at our place but not our hall la...keke....is at Hall 1 and Hall 2..very kesian la the exhibital...all the expensive furniture also kenal...haiz....kesian betul....!!!!The rain really heavy and the thunder too.....Anywhere all the problem stll can settle by our organiser....thanks god!!when start work that was a busy day 4 use...haha...so many coustomer and a lot of come from oversea....waw.....!!!!This furniture fair just only one week....so we just work as one week also...keke....but this job i really work until i miss it and i like it so much.....haha...so funny lei....at there i know a lots of frens....haha...see a job also can make more frens geh....!!!!really miss them a lot....><

Chinese New Year at my lovely church

Yesterday i was go my church service....that's was good....haha...
but on the way we are late to reach the church....bcos it was having traffic jem.....haiz...
our church having a Chinese New Year celebration....so many ppl go...and also bring along their fren to come and join us....
In the night....pastor Kelvin...that is our church pastor...keke....he teach us the bible.....and in this chapter i learnd a lot....it's about 'Honoring Our Parents'....It' has 3 ways that is :-

1) Never Demean of Embarrets them in front of others....
2) Never speak Harshly to our parents...
3) Never Ignore your parents' daily Needs....
4) Have a great Attitude when Relating to our parents....

we also watch the movie that our church staff present to us...that's was good....and so touching...
emm...i think all of this i have do b4....after i watch the show....so bad i'm...
but i won't do it anymore....cos this is a promises with my lovely God.....and i will do more best more care and my love to my lovers daddy and mummy.....i love u all....
we also sing the chinese new year song together.....so happy in that night...keke
although that i was finish my class at 4pm...so tired also...but i was so enjoy the service on yesterday......pray more to god....the god will recieve more 4 u.....amen....

Tonight our CG hav a steamboat gathering at my classmate home.....that was a very happy night and a very bz night
i haven meet.....hahah....why i will say like that....that is bcos.....went i reach there....we just start to prepair all the food....haha....everyone very bz here and bz there....!!!just like having a very big party.....keke....the time very rush
4 us to prepair.....and finally we can start to eat our dinner.......'steamboat' haha.....and later on...we hav so much funny games....really shock and very interested....
after i join the CG....then the last round is my housemate b'day at my home.....waw.....that's really geng lo...my housemate....they all make a very pedas vegetable to my housemate that's who are the b'day guy....haha....he eat until want vomit....wakakaka....so funny.....therefore....we also play water outside our house....the bellon fill in the water and bom to each other.....haha....really pain...but shock.....haha....we all play until so crazy....keke
